FACTS ABOUT AP COURSES

  • A.P. (Advanced Placement) courses are college-level courses offered at a high school.
  • Because this is a college level course, it will require many hours of out of class study. Study sessions will be organized by the teacher but additional study sessions with peers are highly recommended. Students should plan on spending at least an hour a day on the homework for each AP/Honors class.
  • Integral to an AP course is the national AP exam for each subject. Each AP student is expected to take the national exam administered in May, for each course for which they are enrolled. There is a fee to take each test, but financial assistance is provided as needed.
  • Many universities/colleges accept high scores on the AP tests as proof that a student has mastered course content and will waive the required college course thus saving the cost of the course, a savings of between $500-4,000 depending on the university/college.
  • Universities/colleges which don’t waive credit, and even those that do, “weigh” the AP course so that the grade earned in this class “counts more” than a regular high school course towards a high school student’s overall GPA.
  • Universities look very favorably on students who take the academic challenge of an AP course. College recruiters feel that AP courses help students develop the academic as well as study skills necessary to be truly successful in college-level courses.
  • The commitment for this class is as follows:
    • Attend the class daily for the entire year
    • Attend all study sessions and after school tutoring when needed
    • Do all homework and plan to spend one hour of homework per A.P. class per day
    • Ask for assistance at the first sign of trouble and attend tutoring
    • Complete any summer reading lists and/or prep session when assigned.
    • After the first week, you will not be allowed to drop the class.
